When life is tough should we continue pushing – or give up?

When life is tough
should we continue pushing
– or give up?

When life becomes genuinely difficult, the question of whether to keep going or to give up takes on a deeper dimension—not just practical, but spiritual.

Across many traditions, struggle is not seen as meaningless suffering, but as part of a larger journey of growth, purpose, and inner awakening.

From a spiritual perspective, continuing through difficulty can be an act of faith. It reflects trust that there is meaning beyond what we immediately understand. Hardships can shape the soul, teaching patience, humility, compassion, and strength. In this sense, perseverance is not just about achieving an external goal, but about becoming a fuller, wiser version of oneself.

Many spiritual teachings suggest that challenges are placed in our path not to break us, but to refine us.

At the same time, spirituality does not demand endless endurance at any cost.

There is also wisdom in surrender. In fact, surrender is a central idea in many traditions—not as defeat, but as release. It means letting go of the illusion that we must control everything and trusting a greater flow of life.

Sometimes, what feels like “giving up” is actually an invitation to step away from something that no longer aligns with our deeper purpose.

Discernment becomes essential here. Spiritually, we might ask: Is this struggle helping me grow, or is it pulling me away from my sense of peace and truth? Does continuing feel like an act of courage and alignment, or like fear and attachment?

Quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation can help create space to listen for that inner guidance—the voice that is often drowned out by stress and external expectations.

There is also the idea that not all doors are meant to be forced open. Some remain closed for reasons we may not yet understand.

Persisting blindly can sometimes come from ego—the need to prove something, to control outcomes, or to resist change.

Letting go, on the other hand, can be an act of trust: trusting that what is meant for you will not pass you by, and that releasing one path can lead you to another more aligned with your calling.

Importantly, spirituality encourages compassion toward oneself. Whether you choose to keep going or to step back, neither choice makes you weak or strong by default.

What matters is the intention behind it. Are you acting from fear, or from clarity? From pressure, or from inner peace?

In the end, the question is not simply “Should I carry on or give up?” but “What is life asking of me in this moment?”

Sometimes the answer is to persevere with faith and courage. Other times, it is to surrender with trust and grace. Both paths, when chosen with awareness, can lead to growth, healing, and a deeper connection to something greater than ourselves.

Try it and see!
